Bird House Signs with Goldfinches
Back to Birds
Goldfinches are beautifully bright-coloured birds that feature a bright red face and a yellow patch on their wings. It's not just their looks that make them easily recognisable. It's also their song which is a musical twittering of multiple notes that stand out from the rest of the bird species.
These birds are anywhere in the UK that there are scattered bushes and trees. These places include orchards, parks, gardens and heathland. However, they are much less common in Scotland. The birds can be spotted all year round; however, some flocks may migrate south during the colder winter months.
Their nest is neat and well-constructed and usually located up high. The male brings all of the materials for this, while the female builds the nest itself. This process usually takes the birds about a week to complete.
Their long and fine beak allows them to feed on commonly inaccessible seeds from flowers such as thistles. It's due to the thistle eating that this bird was associated with Christ's crown of thorns and was referred to as a "saviour" bird. They are also increasingly visiting bird tables and feeders in our gardens. As goldfinches eat mainly seeds, they need to drink more water than other species of wild birds. You can, therefore, always provide them with a fresh water source in your garden for them to use and enjoy!
